Dennis Burns
Director of Photography

In 1976, Dennis founded Pacific Focus and built it into one of the most respected production companies in Hawaii, employing and mentoring many of the State’s top production professionals.

As a D.P. with over 35 years of experience, he has worked on many film and video productions such as award winning commercials, national TV series, and long-format projects.

Since Dennis participates in triathlons, you can often find him on the streets of Honolulu, running, biking, or swimming. Actually, you’ll find him swimming in the ocean, and not on the streets.

Jason Suapaia
President and Executive Producer/Director

Jason has spent the last 15 years in the television production industry, working at Pacific Focus producing shoots for a wide range of clientele, such as Hilton Hotels in Hawaii, Aloha Airlines, National Geographic, ABC Entertainment, HBO Productions and Revolutions Studios. Along the way he has picked up a District 13 Addy - Best of Show and the ability to really belt out Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive.”

Now as 1013’s fearless leader, we say that because as a child Jason would jump rooftop-to-rooftop dressed as a wolf, he looks to continue creating work and brands that he and our clients are extremely proud of.

Interesting Fact: Jason’s full legal name is over 35 letters long, and he can speak Klingon. He is also part Samoan and collects knives, so it wouldn’t be smart to tease him about anything, especially his ability to speak Klingon.
Jennifer Tanabe
Vice President and Creative Director

Our resident Barbie connoisseur, Jennifer began her career as an art director in St. Louis and San Francisco, branding such clients as Minute Maid, Bank of America, and Upper Deck Trading Cards, which admittedly, got her a bunch of calls from guys, but none of them were named Ken.

In 1997, Jennifer returned to Honolulu and worked for Milici Valenti Ng Pack for nearly a decade, creating and building brands for clients such as Starwood Hotels and Resorts, McDonald's of Hawaii, First Hawaiian Bank, Hawaii Visitors and Conventions Bureau, Matson Navigation Company and Hawaiian Telcom.

Over the years, she has garnered numerous local and national awards including a silver One Show Pencil, recognition in Honolulu Magazine’s Annual Design issue, and then in 2007, Jennifer was awarded a District 13 Addy - Best of Show for the 'Ohina Short Film Showcase Trailer. Soon after, she formed her own Hawaii advertising agency, Lewis and Montgomery, with David Ciano.

When Jennifer has spare time, you’ll find her volunteering for The Contemporary Museum, walking her two dogs, drinking tall, iced, soy vanilla lattes, and checking email on her iPhone.
David Ciano
Associate Creative Director

In 1999, David was given a choice to dust sand off Baywatch Hawaii's female stars or move to San Francisco and pursue a career in advertising. After an arduous decision-making process, David did what most men his age would do – he went to ad school at the Academy of Art University.

Since then, David has worked as a copywriter at some really good San Francisco agencies (Foote Cone & Belding and BuderEngel & Friends), made some really good friends, garnered fancy awards for his shelf (a CLIO and One Show Merit), and learned to say ""what if"" and ""why not"" on every project.

In 2004, he returned to Hawaii (can you blame him) and found a home at Milici Valenti Ng Pack, building brands for Hawaiian Telcom, Aloha Airlines and Starwood Hotels, as well as trying to find room on his shelf for more fancy awards.

And then with a determined look, nearly ten years of experience and a hard drive full of 80's music, he founded Lewis & Montgomery with his friend and art director partner Jen Tanabe. And now at 1013, he looks forward each day to laughing, building brands, and inventing new ways to connect brands with people.

Karen Sundborg
Accounting Manager

When we say Karen brings a wealth of experience to 1013, we really mean it. Her career in accounting began over 20 years ago when she earned a BBA in Accounting from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Soon after, Karen realized that working at CPA firms and banks would really limit her chances of meeting “hot and hunky” actors. So in 1992, she took her irresistible smile, infectious laugh, and love of action and sci-fi movies to Pacific Focus where she became their Accounting Manager.

And now as 1013’s monetary matriarch, Karen continues to be responsible for all financial management, including Receivables, Payables, Cash Management, Payroll, Financial Reporting, and making sure all of her Josh Holloway pictures are dusted, level and facing her.

At home, she’s just as busy balancing her time between her kids' various school and sports activities, volunteering as team mom and playing referee (not necessarily during her kids' games.)
Ken Sato
Producer / Director

Born in Richmond, Indiana and raised in Hawaii, Ken has spent a great majority of his life listening to 80’s music, dancing to 80’s music, and singing 80’s music (not necessarily in that order.) However, mixed in between the MC Hammer verses he has accomplished a few things.

Verse 1
He began his career at a local television station, working his way up from an audio and camera tech to a director of newscasts and television commercials.

<Guitar break>

Verse 2
That eventually led to Pacific Focus where he directed and produced various spots for Starwood and Hilton Hotels, as well as long format projects for their in-room channels.

<Guitar break>

Verse 3
When not working, Ken spends time with his wife and kids, teaches the Japanese martial art of Kendo, and listens to…well, you know.
David Sato
Production

Dave graduated from University of Hawaii with a B.A. in American Studies and got his start in production at a local television station as a morning news cameraman, which meant waking up at 3am and operating 3 cameras at once using a joystick (all those years of playing video games paid off).

Then at Pacific Focus, he worked his way up the ladder as a P.A., Grip, Assistant Cameraman to shooting many local and national commercials as well as TV series, ENGs and EPKs (the last two are TV industry terms that mean very important video shoots.)

Now a highly sought after cameraman, Dave has worked on many award winning TV spots as well as shot for clients like Hawaiian Telcom, Taco Bell, and Aloha United Way.

When he’s not shooting, Dave plays classical guitar (he minored in music), is a Kendoist (think fencing with Samurai swords), and enjoys a thick Guinness while watching Da Bears.

Tobias Huber
Production

A native of Basel, Switzerland, Tobias spent his college years attending Hawaii Pacific University. Shortly after graduating with a B.A. in Visual Communications in 2003, Tobias permanently traded in his cheese, chocolate and Ueli Bier for sun, surf and lots of SPF 50 sunblock, not to mention a position at Pacific Focus.

There’s a reason his “1013” business card says “Production.” On shoots, you can find him in various roles: camera operator, gaffer or the guy on set hanging a spoon off the tip of his nose. Tobias has worked on such brands as the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, Japan Airlines, National Geographic, as well as for ABC, NBC, and HBO.

When not working (and that’s not very often), Tobias enjoys anything outdoorsy, a good Italian style thin-crust pizza with fresh ingredients, and real “football” otherwise known as soccer in the States.
Jenny Maness
Production Coordinator

Although she was born in Japan, Jenny has grown to call Hawaii her home. Sugoi!

She began her career in video production at Pacific Focus, after completing her BA in Communications at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She quickly moved up the ranks, coordinating productions for clients such as Reebok, Maui Jim, Taco Bell, and Aloha Maid Drinks, occasionally getting cast in some of them (perk of the job).

In addition to her passion for production, Jenny loves to cook for co-workers and friends. These days she’s doing it once a week during her favorite show, The Office.
Jeff Katts
Assistant Editor

Born and raised in Honolulu, Jeff has always had a great affinity for Hollywood. Though his formative years were spent collecting bottle caps and trading cards, most of his free time was filled with watching the 80’s TV series V (his all time favorite show) and making homemade movies.

But it was only after he attended Honolulu Community College did he realize that his love for video production could be a profession. After getting his A.S. degree in Commercial Art and working as a freelance videographer, Jeff started at Pacific Focus in 1994 as a nighttime duplicator.

Since then, Jeff has become an assistant editor, co-created the Ohina Short Film Showcase, and produced a number of short films.  He has also developed 2 feature movies shown locally and is currently working on an on-going multi-media project called Soul Saviour. Not bad for a guy who worked the graveyard shift making dubs.
Nicole Bonning
Senior Project Manager

Although born and raised on the pristine shores of Oahu’s Windward side, Nicole spent most of her time with her first love, tennis, on the black asphalt courts of the Kailua Recreation Center and Punahou School’s Dillingham Tennis Complex. But it wasn’t until she attended Santa Clara University did she discover her true love, her husband, and then marketing.

Nicole’s first step into the marketing world was a college internship at a small ad shop in the Bay Area during the Internet’s hey-day.  When that advertising agency offered her a job, she stayed to work full-time in both media and account services departments.

In 2004, Nicole returned to Hawaii and joined Firefly, Milici Valenti Ng Pack’s interactive and web design arm. At Firefly, she helped launch Hawaiian Telcom, and was the senior project manager for Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau. During her stint managing the HVCB account, Hawaii saw 95% hotel occupancy. And then in 2007 and 2008, HVCB’s online campaigns won Platinum Adrian Awards by the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International, as well as District 13 Addys (Pele Awards).
